Sofia announces its 2020 Wagner Festival
The Sofia National Opera and Ballet present their 8th annual Wagner Festival for 2020, which this time will include a major work by Richard Strauss
The Sofia National Opera and Ballet has an annual tradition of presenting works by Richard Wagner in their theatre calendar. In previous years they have presented the Ring cycle, as well as Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal

The General Manager of the theatre, Plamen Kartaloff, is also the stage director of all the Wagner performances of the Sofia Opera. He has developed a very interesting performance – Wagner in the Magura Cave which takes place during the summer festival Opera of the Peaks – Belogradchik Rocks. This performance is quite special because instead of using the traditional opera hall it is played in a real cave. The interest of the audience for it is huge and the tickets sell out very quickly.

At the same time, the Opera House organises various activities aimed at educating the young audience about Richard Wagner’s opera legacy. They have initiated an event called “Wagner for students” which includes lectures, films, and a preview of the singers. This engenders interest among the young in coming to see the production.

This season the 8th Wagner (and Strauss) Festival is planned, with Parsifal on 30 June 2020 at 18:00 and Die  Walküre on 2 July at 18:00.
