Sunday 25 June 2023, 7pm, St John’s Church, Waterloo, London SE1 8TY
Richard Wagner: Parsifal Act 2, concert performance
Arnold Schoenberg: Verklärte Nacht – Transfigured Night, arranged for full orchestra by Jonathan Finney
Continuing the New Palace Opera tradition of presenting Wagner in concert, this is an evening of ultra-romantic music, featuring at its centre the attempted sexual seduction of the innocent Parsifal to the dark side by the supernatural seductress Kundry.
In contrast, this is preceded by Schoenberg’s Tristanesque musical tone poem about the redemptive power of love. Verklärte Nacht began life as a string sextet before being arranged by the composer for string orchestra – in this latest incarnation will be presented for full orchestra, emulating the composer’s own romantic masterpiece Gurrelieder.
In the title role, we welcome back Alex Haigh fresh from his triumphant Albert Herring with New Palace Opera last December.
Cast
Parsifal: Alex Haigh
Kundry: Catharine Woodward
Klingsor: Nicholas Morris
Flower Maidens: Ingeborg Børch, Corinne Hart, Kristel Vinter Knudsen, Charlotte Richardson, Wendy Silvester, Grace Wain
The orchestra of New Palace Opera
Conductor: Jonathan Finney
