This prize of €10,000 will be awarded to the Dresden native during the Wagner Festival in Leipzig in May.
"In Hartmut Haenchen, we are honouring a conductor who is not only engaged in an ongoing creative process, but above all is following in Richard Wagner's footsteps", explained Thomas Krakow, Chairman of the Board of the Richard Wagner Foundation.
The prize has been awarded since 2013 for outstanding commitment by musicians and publicists to the cultivation and examination of Richard Wagner's artistic and socio-political work.
Haenchen was a member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor. He worked in Halle, Berlin and Schwerin and was chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic in Amsterdam. He has repeatedly engaged with Wagner's works, including conducting the new production of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival in 2016 and 2017.
