R. Wagner and his wife Minna. The London letters
Richard Wagner Society, London
Next Tuesday evening, 15 November at 7pm, the Musicologist Professor Eva Rieger at Bremen University, is giving a talk via zoom on Minna Wagner following the publication of her biography of the subject earlier this year.
Minna Planer was a successful actress when she met the young composer and supported them both in the early years of their marriage. She endured with him the fearful crossing of the Baltic which became The Flying Dutchman and accompanied him to receptions and balls in London. They parted company after his affair in Zurich with Mathilde Wesendonck. Eva Rieger returns (virtually) to St George's after several decades. She is the daughter of Pastor Julius Rieger who was priest in charge at St George's German Lutheran Church during the 1930s and who helped victims of Nazi persecution escape to London.
